It began with the dying embers of a fire in the middle of an ice field. One tent, shared body heat, the uncertainty of what the following day would bring, and a now-or-never impulse.
It began with an ice fissure just big enough to cram two men into. The thought that there were worse ways to die than together.
It began with exchanged blows and a sinking ship. The kiss of life, literally.
It began with instinctually running for safety and finding that wasn’t with fellow officers.
It began with a charade and a hug.
It doesn’t matter. It began.
