[identity profile] gius.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] ds_slash
Hi, I just recently got interested in Due South after seeing slash illustrations and stories of it (lol). I would just like to know, are Vecchio and Fraser really together in the tv series? (or maybe it is just hinted to.) Whenever I search for Due South info, I do get links to communities for slash and a lot of the userpics of the members show some kind of intimacy between the two characters, so that is why I am wondering.

Please don't take these because they aren't mine.
The second one looks like it might have been drawn, but I'm not sure.

I have never seen the tv series, since I was maybe still a careless child when it aired, but I'm thinking of starting :)

No, not really together in canon. I'm not sure about the first icon, but the second is a manip, definately.

And honey, watch canon! Especially 3rd and 4th season (the Kowalski era), where the writers were aware of slash and playing up to it: there are times when you have your jaw dropped and your hand on your face going "... and they AREN'T fucking like bunnies? Can they DO this on TV?"

The first of those icons is from a screencap; the second is a manip.

There's no canon slash in due South. However, there is a vast wealth of subtext for both Fraser/Ray Vecchio and Fraser/Ray Kowalski pairings.

As fandoms go, it's a slasher's dream. *g*

[livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto is a good place to start:

Fraser/Vecchio (http://community.livejournal.com/ship_manifesto/30089.html)

Fraser/Kowalski (http://community.livejournal.com/ship_manifesto/13160.html)

Then there's the [livejournal.com profile] newbieguide Guide to due South Fandom on LJ (http://community.livejournal.com/newbieguide/12007.html).

Welcome to the fandom. :-)

Canon refers to the part of the show that the original producers/writers/directors/actors made. The actual TV series that was aired.

Fanon, which is the part of the culture that we take over, refers to us fans getting together and writing fanfic, creating manips and vids.

Oh, you should watch the whole thing. I personally get more of a friendship vibe between Vecchio/Fraser, but different strokes for different folks.

THe writing is (IMHO) at its peak in 2nd season.

Watching 1st and 2nd season will aid your understanding of the characters. And also, Vecchio= hot, all in his own special way.

If you're watching for subtext that is all-but-text, 3rd and 4th season are the go.

Butting in: "Canon" (in fandom) refers to anything that actually happened on the show.

A good source for explanations of fandom terminology is the Fanfiction Glossary (http://www.subreality.com/glossary/terms.htm)

The first icon is from the episode "North" and is not manipped. It's not a romantic moment. Vecchio has just tackled Fraser to prevent him from walking off a cliff. (Great episode, too!)

I loved S1 and S2. I was definitely hooked on Due South from day one--I watched it in its first run and taped every ep because, as a scarred veteran of the Star Trek and Forever Knight and other fandoms, I thought if I loved it, cancellation couldn't be far off (and I was right--it was canceled more than once). But I didn't see the show as slashable then. Vecchio's vibe with Fraser is definitely one of LOVE, but it's very brotherly. Saintly, even, at times. Watch them in order; you'll see.

I remember that when RayK came on the scene in the beginning of S3, I thought, "NOW we can slash this show." And they went on to incorporate plenty of homoerotic subtext in the show, for whatever reason. Sometimes it was more overt than subtext. (My icon is not manipped except for the addition of the text. It's a frame from S4 "Odds.") We do know, from an interview Paul Gross gave, that quite a lot of the homoerotic stuff was deliberately done. However, I'm sure he didn't intend to support only one interpretation of the material. He seemed to encourage people to draw their own interpretations. It's a great attitude for a producer and an author to have. Yay, Paul! As a fandom, we are BLESSED.

I would suggest watching the show in order. I did last year, the first time I'd seen the whole thing again since it originally aired, and RayK won me over so thoroughly that I think I wouldn't have been able to make myself watch all the Vecchio eps again if I'd seen S3 and S4 first. They are great, don't get me wrong, but the slash pairing of Fraser and RayK is so compelling that I now find the earlier eps unsatisfying. So watch them first, just in case! :)

If you can get your hands on the episodes (and in the US anyway the entire series is available in three box sets for around $60 total), I *really* recommend the series.

I'm just falling for it myself and have just started, with some friends, a one-episode-per-week watching plan. I'm posting notes on each of the episodes in turn (with screencaps), so we have a place for discussion.

So far I just have notes on the pilot and the first regular episode:
Pilot (http://sara-merry99.livejournal.com/181914.html)
Free Willie (http://sara-merry99.livejournal.com/185209.html)

Please feel free to come join the fun, even if you haven't seen the episodes. (Though the episodes offer *more* wonderful than I can convey in my notes. And you'll probably get more out of the notes if you've seen the episode.)

Hey, I was wondering if you know if there's a link to that Paul Gross article; I've been trying to find it for a while now, with no luck.

Wow, I just don't how people DON'T see the Fraser/Vecchio love....

No, it's not canon, but...WOW, there is some serious devotion going on there, and stuff that is more typical of a married couple than a pair of friends. Ray will do anything for Fraser and it's obvious he adores the man.

My icon here, isn't a manip either - it's the first case they worked on and barely know each other, but already, there's no such thing as personal space anymore...

That's Ray's hand on Fraser's shoulder, by the way.

I'm sorry, I can't find the link at the moment; however, I think I do have an archive copy of the article. Email me.

That first picture would be my default icon which is a cropped screencap from the episode North.
The second would be a manip by the highly talented [livejournal.com profile] tomoriv.

If you want to check out out more stuff on Fraser/vecchio I runa comm devoted to it [livejournal.com profile] ds_closet I'm currently going through the series to try and pick up all the subtext that makes me see the slash pairing of Fraser/Vecchio.

I am about halfway through season 1. These are my posts so far:

The Subtext I See - The Pilot to They Eat Horses Don't They? (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_closet/95859.html)

And

The Subtext I See - Pizza and Promises to A Cop, A Mountie and a Baby (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_closet/98697.html)

We do have a fair amount of other Fraser/Vecchio stuff over at [livejournal.com profile] ds_closet if that helps at all.

I love that moment in the pilot - so intimate for two guys who've really only just met.

Have you checked out [livejournal.com profile] ds_closet btw? We're full of the Fraser/Vecchio love there. /shameless plug.
