FanFic: In Troops of Two, F/K, PG.
Feb. 28th, 2010 03:52 pmTitle: In troops of two.
Pairing: Fraser/RayK pre-slash.
Rating: PG.
AN: coda for, ‘I Coulda Been A Defendant’, and ‘Strange Bedfellows’.
Summary: “Look, I do this, I want a badge. A ‘tuck in on the floor, I hurt my back’ badge.”
“I’ll get you one.”
The thing with undercover, is, well, it doesn’t cancel out.
They can call him any name they want, stick him with a family, a friend, a case load taller than he is. And still, Kowalski or not, Stella can come waltzing back in, an Alderman on her arm and a target on her back. It’s been six weeks and a couple of days, less than two months of being Vecchio, and already Ray’s hauled back to the surface, gasping the cool, dense air that is reality.
“Ray,” Fraser’s saying from the doorway of Ray’s apartment. He looks at Ray with heavy, empathetic eyes and against all the odds, manages to make Ray feel even worse. “I know you said you wanted to be alone - ”
“I did say that, Frase, yeah,” because Stella had kissed his cheek and said goodbye for the last last time, closing the door. Ray wants to do the same, he wants the strength to be alone, and be okay.
“I just stopped by to give you something,” Fraser says, tucking his hat under his arm and fishing around in his pocket. Ray falls backward into the sofa, snorting.
“Is it redemption?”
“Uh, no, Ray, I’m afraid not.”
“Then I don’t want it.”
“On the contrary.” Fraser – who seems to forget that he is the poster boy for Decorum – sits on Ray’s coffee table to face him. “You asked for this specifically.”
Ray sits up, rubbing at his eyes with dry and indifferent hands. “Well, what is it?” he says in a sigh, and looks over. Fraser has his head ducked, holding a small, circular badge of cotton, and fingering it absently. He licks his lip.
“It’s a Tuck In On The Floor, I Hurt My Back, badge, Ray.”
Ray sighs again. He doesn’t have the patience or concern for Fraser’s weirdness, today. “I don’t follow.”
“When you, Bruce and I were hiding out in Constable Turnbull’s apartment you told me you wanted one in return for your sacrifice.”
“… You’re kidding.”
Fraser shows Ray that no, he isn’t kidding. It’s tiny, an intricate swirl of colour, three little figures settled, asleep beneath their blankets. Ray takes it gently, lays it flat on his palm and breathes deep and feels something. Once more.
“Who – did you make this?”
“I had to, Ray. The Boy Scout Association don’t seem to believe it warrants rewarding.”
Ray’s laughter bubbles up to the surface before settling, warm in his chest. “I don’t believe – I can’t believe you.”
“It will have to be sewn on to something, Ray, to make it official,” Ray laughs again, but doesn’t know if it’s a joke, “But I thought, for now, I could pin it to you, if that’s okay.”
“Yeah, sure, okay.” Fraser takes a safety pin out and settles the badge against Ray’s heart. “Do you have to, uh, make a speech or somethin’?”
“Oh, well, I certainly can Ray, if that’s what you’d like?” Ray doesn’t object. “So, with the powers vested in me, by numerous sources that are by no means official so I won’t cite them here in case I’m arrested for libel,” they are both smirking now, an easiness has settled, a happiness returning, little by little, “I pronounce you the most delicate boy scout I have ever had the fortune of meeting.”
“Thanks, Fraser,” Ray says, touching at his new badge as if he can’t believe it’s there. “You’re the biggest freak I’ve been lucky enough to meet. Real lucky.”
Fraser grins at him, radiating, and Ray thinks, I don’t know, Fraser, maybe you’ve brought redemption, after all.

Date: 2010-06-02 03:52 pm (UTC)Aw! This is the sweetest fic - it's wonderful how you show how caring Fraser can be. He brought a little something silly for Ray, but he knew it would make him feel better. He is a very good friend.
Ray is a delicate boy scout - hehe!
Thank you.
